Battlefields - A Beautiful Region Burying South Africa's Early Conflicts

The Battlefields Region lies in the northeastern part of KwaZulu-Natal. It borders the Free State in the north east and Mpumalanga in the north. The Midlands lie to the south with the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains rising up towards the southeast. The wide areas of savannah grasslands and rolling hills give this region a sense of calmness, sometimes making it difficult to identify with the human conflicts of the past.

The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields, a well-known tourist destination in South Africa, has a historical past mixed with wars and battles. This region possess the largest concentration of battlefields in South Africa. Its history includes the confrontations of the Voortrekkers and the Zulus, the early British settlers and the powerful Zulu nation and later the Anglo Boer war. Many monuments and memorials stand tribute to the many live lost in these confrontations.

The famous siege museum in Ladysmith is considered one of the best Anglo-Boer war museums in South Africa. Ladysmith was besieged for 118 days during the Anglo-Boer War. The museum was originally a marketplace, built in 1884. It then served as a ration post throughout the siege and was converted into a museum and library in 1965. The museum houses a collection of artefacts, documents, firearms and uniforms on display, as well as a series of excellent photographs, which tell the story of the siege of Ladysmith. There is also a diorama depicting Ladysmith at the time of the siege. The museum is located on Murchison Street next to the Town Hall.

Further north one finds the Spioenkop Nature Reserve which is also known for its battlefield and offers visitors a chance to enjoy its scenic beauty and fascinating history. Spionkop also offers a panoramic view of the entire Northern and Central Drakensberg.

The Battlefields Region is popular as an outdoor recreation area and caters for most adventure sports. The Battlefields also boast a number of wildlife and game reserves. The Ntshingwayo Dam in the Chelmsford Nature Reserve is a well-liked water sport and fishing destination. Many of the rivers in the region also offer good fishing in season. Birding is another popular activity enjoyed in this area, as well in KwaZulu-Natal in general.
